Professor Angela Nickerson

Professor Angela Nickerson is the Director of the Refugee Trauma and Recovery Program. She received a BA (Hons) from the University of Queensland, and a PhD/Master of Psychology (Clinical) from UNSW. She completed postdoctoral research fellowships at Harvard University, Boston University and the VA Boston. She has received a number of fellowships including an American Australian Association Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, an NHMRC Clinical Early Career Fellowship and a NHMRC Clinical Career Development Fellowship. She has also been awarded the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies Chaim and Bela Danieli Young Professional Award, and the Royal Society of NSW Edgeworth David Medal for her work in refugee mental health research.

Angela’s research program investigates psychological and social mechanisms underpinning refugee and asylum-seeker mental health, with the ultimate goal of informing policy and practice with refugees. In Angela’s research, she implements multiple methodologies to understand how these factors influence mental health. Her research ranges from experimental studies to uncover basic mechanisms, to longitudinal research to investigate change in mental health over time, to randomized controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy of mental health interventions for refugees. Angela has published peer reviewed journal articles in leading journals such as Clinical Psychological Science, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Psychological Medicine, Lancet Psychiatry and Depression and Anxiety. She is co-editor on a book on the mental health of refugees and asylum-seekers.
