What is the prism family study?

The PRISM Family study is a research project conducted by the Refugee Trauma and Recovery Program at UNSW, in collaboration with the Australian Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross. We aim to understand the psychological impact of having a missing or separated family member, as well as how people cope with having a missing or separated family member over time.

Who can participate?

  • Adults with a refugee or asylum seeker background

  • Currently have a missing or separated family member (does not know where they are and does not have any contact with them OR is separated from family living overseas)

  • Able to complete an online survey on a smart phone or computer in English, Arabic, Dari or Swahili

Clients with Additional Support needs

If a client is interested in participating but has additional support needs, we may be able to support them. We can provide support if the client:

  • Does not have access to a smart phone or computer

  • Cannot use a smart phone or computer

  • Has difficulty reading the study questions

  • Cannot speak or read in one of the available languages

You will be able to detail the client’s additional support needs in the registration form. You can also send us an email at prism@unsw.edu.au or call us at (02) 9385 0006 with the participant’s name, phone number, preferred language, and their additional support needs.

What does the study involve?

Participants will be asked to complete a survey 4 times over the next 2.5 years. Each time they complete a survey, participants will receive a $25 Coles electronic shopping voucher.
